ما ایرانی‌ها مثل همه مردم دنیا، دورهمی های زیادی داریم. از مراسم های فرهنگی و سنّتی گرفته تا همایش ها و گردهمایی‌ها و در نهایت کافه نشینی‌هایمان. ولی اغلب جای یک چیزی خالی است. جای رویدادی که خروجی ملموسی داشته باشد و دست آخر بگوییم که: بله، حداقل یک بار هم که شده دورهم جمع شدیم و خیلی جدّی کاری کردیم که به کار آید. هکاتون (Hackathon) راهکاری هیجان انگیز برای حل این موضوع است.

هک کردن چیز بدی نیست، باور کنید

قبل از اینکه سراغ هکاتون برویم، باید تکلیف خودمان را با واژه -هک- روشن کنیم. هک به معنای تخریب و از بین بردن نیست. این تصوّری است که مدت‌هاست به اشتباه رایج شده است. هک به معنای نفوذی حرفه‌ای برای تولید یا بهتر کردن یک برنامه کامپیوتری (و یا هر چیز دیگری) است. کسانی که به قصد تخریب (مثلا دزدیدن رمز مودم وایرلس!) سر به سر بقیه میگذراند کِرَکِر نامیده می‌شوند و اغلب احترام چندانی به آنها قایل نمی‌شویم مگر اینکه در راستای هدفی بزرگتر دست به چنین کاری زده باشند.

وقتی حرف از جوان‌های غربی و دورهمی‌هایشان می‌شود تصویری که در ذهنمان ساخته شده، چیزی به جز جشن‌ها و بزن و بکوب‌های بی مهابا نیست ولی روی دیگر ماجرا بخشی از زندگی جوانانی است که زندگی آنها با تکنولوژی عجین شده است. یکی از این دورهمی‌های به شدت هیجان انگیز، هکاتون نام دارد. در هکاتون چند صد نفر برنامه نویس، طراح گرافیک، مدیر پروژه (و یا هر کسی که خلاصه یک چیزی از دستش برمیاید) دور هم جمع می‌شوند و در مدت زمان کوتاه و مشخص، سعی می‌کنند چیزی را هک کنند. این چیز می‌تواند حفره‌ای امنیتی در یک نرم افزاری بسیار پیچیده باشد و یا طراحی وب سایت برای یک موسسه خیریه. در هکاتون‌ها دیگر چندان خبری از گزافه گویی نیست و باید آستین‌ها را بالا زد و شروع کرد به کد نوشتن. بسته به اینکه چه شرکتی هکاتون را برگزار می‌کند، جایزه مشخصی در نظر گرفته می‌شود که معمولا آنقدری عدد بزرگی هست که فضای رقابتی شدیدی را بوجود بیاورد. در اینجا دیگر خبری از غذاهای رنگارنگ و تخت خواب های گرم و نرم نیست. باید پیه یکی دو شب بی خوابی و کار کردن مثل یک ماشین را به تن بمالیم. برای خورد و خوراک هر از گاهی یک نوشابه انرژی زا و قطعه ای پیتزا فکر بدی نیست و محض احتیاط هم که شده باید یک کیسه خواب به همراه داشته باشیم تا اگر وقتی برای چشم روی هم گذاشتن پیدا کردیم از ان استفاده کنیم وگرنه باید بتوانیم جایی روی صندلی‌ها و میزها برای خود دست و پا کنیم.

هکاتون (Hackathon)

هکاتون از ترکیب دو واژه هک و ماراتون بوجود آمده و از آن بعنوان بزرگ‌ترین رویداد آموزشی جهان بعد از پدید آمدن اینترنت یاد می‌شود. در حالی که اینترنت زمینه استفاده از دانش موجود در جهان را فراهم می‌کند، هکاتون‌ها از همین بستر برای خلاقیت و اضافه کردن چیزی به آن بهره می‌برد. دیگر به جای اینکه در کافه‌ها و کتابخانه‌ها راجع به مشکلات دنیا حرف بزنیم، فرصتی داریم که دور هم جمع بشویم و شانس خود را برای حل این مشکلات امتحان کنیم. هیچ محدودیت، قانون عجیب و غریب و آزمایشی وجود ندارد و همه از یک فرصت برابر برای تبدیل دانسته‌هایمان به چیزی به درد بخور استفاده می‌کنیم.

هکاتون‌ها خروجی به دردبخوری دارند؟

خوب... از تعداد هکاتون‌هایی که توسط غول‌هایی مانند اَپل، گوگل و بقیه برگزار می‌شود، می‌توان حدس زد که خروجی هکاتون‌ها اغلب نرم‌افزارهای عظیمی است. برای مثال بخش اعظمی از نرم افزار اسکایپ را سیستمی به نام -گروپ می- شکل داده است. این سیستم خروجی یکی از هکاتون‌های آمریکاست که مدتی بعد از ادامه فعالیت خود توسط اسکایپ به قیمت ۵۰ میلیون دلار خریداری شد. خوب... برای چند ماه کار پول بدی هم نیست! نرم‌افزار دیگری که به احتمال هر روز با آن سروکار دارید، سیستم لایک و چت فیسبوک است که بعد از هکاتونی بین کارمندهای فیسبوک بوجود آمد و همه گیر شد.
تا قبل از سال ۲۰۱۳ رکورد بیشترین جایزه برای هکاتون‌ها در دست هکاتون وب سایت تک کرانچ بود که به برنده طراحی یک بازی برای شبکه‌های اجتماعی، ۲۵۰ هزار دلار جایزه می‌داد ولی سال پیش شرکت سیلزفورس یک هکاتون برگزار کرد و با تایین جایزه یک میلیون دلاری رکورد بیشترین جایزه را شکست.

دانشگاه‌ها کجای کارند؟

برخلاف تصوّر همیشگی که دانشگاه‌ها کاری به کار هکرها ندارند، بزرگترین هکاتون‌ها تا بحال در دانشگاه ها برگزار شده‌اند. دانشگاه مهندسی پن در فیلادلفیا و دانشگاه لس آنجلس به ترتیب هر سال میزبان هکاتون‌های پن اپس (PennApps) و ال‌ای هکس (LAHacks) هستند که بیشترین آمار شرکت کنندگان را در میان بقیه دانشگاه‌های آمریکایی و اروپایی دارند. هکاتون‌هایی چند ده هزار نفره با حضور شرکت کنندگانی از همه دانشگاه‌های آمریکا.

Hacking is not a bad thing, believe me

Before we dive into the hackathon, we need to clarify our stance on the term -hack-. Hacking does not mean destruction or annihilation. This is a misconception that has been wrongly popular for a long time. Hacking means a professional intrusion to create or improve a computer program (or anything else). Those who intrude with the intent to destroy (for example, stealing a wireless modem password!) are called crackers, and we usually do not have much respect for them unless they have done such a thing for a greater purpose.

When it comes to Western youth and their gatherings, the image we have in our minds is nothing but wild parties and celebrations, but the other side of the story is part of the lives of young people whose lives are intertwined with technology. One of these extremely exciting gatherings is called a hackathon. In a hackathon, several hundred programmers, graphic designers, project managers (or anyone who can contribute in some way) gather together and try to hack something within a short and specified time. This thing can be a security vulnerability in a very complex software or designing a website for a charity. In hackathons, there is no room for nonsense, and we must roll up our sleeves and start coding. Depending on which company is hosting the hackathon, a specific prize is set, which is usually large enough to create a fierce competitive atmosphere. Here, there is no news of colorful foods and warm, soft beds. We must prepare for one or two sleepless nights and work like a machine. For food and drink, an energy drink and a slice of pizza every now and then is not a bad idea, and just in case, we should have a sleeping bag with us so that if we find time to catch some sleep, we can use it; otherwise, we should be able to find a spot on the chairs and tables for ourselves.

Hackathon

Hackathon is formed from the combination of the words hack and marathon and is referred to as the largest educational event in the world since the advent of the internet. While the internet provides the opportunity to use existing knowledge in the world, hackathons leverage this platform for creativity and adding something to it. Instead of talking about the world's problems in cafés and libraries, we have the opportunity to gather together and test our chances of solving these problems. There are no restrictions, strange laws, or experiments, and everyone uses an equal opportunity to turn our knowledge into something useful.

Do hackathons have useful outputs?

Well... from the number of hackathons held by giants like Apple, Google, and others, one can guess that the outputs of hackathons are often massive software. For example, a significant portion of Skype's software was shaped by a system called -GroupMe-. This system is the output of one of the hackathons in America, which was later acquired by Skype for 50 million dollars after continuing its operations. Well... not a bad amount for a few months of work! Another software that you probably deal with every day is the like and chat system of Facebook, which was created during a hackathon among Facebook employees and became widespread.
Until 2013, the record for the highest prize for hackathons was held by the TechCrunch website hackathon, which awarded $250,000 to the winner for designing a game for social networks, but last year Salesforce held a hackathon and broke the record for the highest prize by setting a $1 million prize.

Where do universities stand?

Contrary to the common perception that universities have nothing to do with hackers, the largest hackathons have been held at universities. Penn Engineering University in Philadelphia and UCLA host the PennApps and LAHacks hackathons every year, respectively, which have the highest participation rates among other American and European universities. Hackathons with tens of thousands of participants from all universities in America.
